El Rey Del Sabor

Ever since I took Midtown Lunch's advice about the tamale lady in front of the Mexican Embassy, I pay close attention to his Mexican food posts. The original tamale lady isn't there anymore and has been replaced by another woman whose tamales don't taste as good. Since El Rey Del Sabor is too far from work, I went to try it on a day off.

The Good.

  • The cart sells a variety of tacos, huraches, and enchiladas. All of them come with rice and beans which makes for a fulfilling meal.
  • The main reason I was here was the mole sauce. I got a beef enchilada with mole sauce and radishes instead of onions. It wasn't a substitution I would have thought of had it not been given by the cart owner. I liked my meal even though I like spicy food. I couldn't really taste any sense of heat in the dish but the meat was seasoned well.
  • The emapanadas are good. Flaky and fried but they don't stand out to me. Empanada Mama's emapanada fillings are moister.

The Bad
  • I didn't like the tamales here. The cart only sells chicken tamales. I prefer pork. It's not even a meat issue. The chicken tamale wasn't as flavorful as the chicken ones made by the first tamale lady. Contrary to the Midtown Lunch post, I didn't have to ask them to hold the sauce. I think the tamale comes as is.

Mole Enchiladas with rice and beans was only $7, Tamales and Empanadas are $1.50. Not a bad deal. I munched on my purchases all day and ended up spending $10 for lunch and dinner.
