Took Alan to eat at Asia De Cuba on Friday for a belated birthday dinner. The food was terrific and the decor is beautiful. There were complaints about service on citysearch but our service was phenomenal. Some people complain that fancy restaurants aren't filling- this is the place for those people. We started with Mambo Kings- champagne with raspberry vodka with the rims lined with raw sugar dipped in raspberry juice. The sugar in the champagne made a cool swirl of bubbles in the drink. The waiter suggested that for 2 people, all we needed were 2 appetizers and an entree, possibly a side, since the portions are big. Alan was hungry so we went with the Tunapica, Calamari Salad, Plantain Fried Rice and a Sirloin Steak. The Tunapica came out and it's really tuna tartare with olives, currants and almonds served on tortilla chips so it wasn't that big. It was delicious and left us wanting more. So we thought we were smart for ordering the fried rice side. But then the Calamari Salad came out and DAMN! It was the size of all my lunch salads for the week put together and then some. It was really good. It had fried calamari, mixed greens, bananas, some kind of nut, heart of palm and 2 other things I can't identify. We were both full by the time we finished both appetizers. The sirloin steak came out and it has got to be the best sirloin steak I've had. I never order Sirloin, alway Filet Mignon because I dont like that cut but they used some kind of spice that made it taste so good! I can't describe it, It was like how shish-ke-bobs smell but tasted better. The dish also came with some vegetable salad of sliced peppers, spouts, celery? Then a big heaping bowl of Plantain Fried Rice came out that was topped with an Avacado Salad. We barely even touched the rice, had to bring it home. But of course we had to get dessert. Opted for the Coconut cake with chocolate syrup, coconut flakes and coconut sorbet. I like coconut but I've never had so much coconut for dessert. It was so filling.
